I need to watch what I read.
I read a lot. I prefer reading to watching television, going to the movies, or listening to the radio. Most of my reading consists of books related to spiritual issues, and of course I read the Bible devotionally as well as when I’m preparing messages. The reading, watching, and listening I do which is not related to my work consists mostly of reading the newspaper (everyday) and watching television news or political commentary.
(Patriots football, Red Sox baseball, and Celtics basketball are entertainment … I watch them for relaxation. Some times it’s not as relaxing as I would like it to be!)
Here’s my concern: are the books and newspapers I read, and the television shows I watch, really healthy for me? Are they strengthening me intellectually, emotionally or spiritually?
There’s a lot of attention being given to ‘junk food’? We know junk food isn’t good for our health. I think there is junk media (and I’m not just talking about the garbage we’re being fed in morally challenged books, movies, and television). I need to watch reading less-than-good books (in my case that means less-than-good religious books!), and spending so much time reading and watching meaningless news and commentary. It doesn’t benefit me. In fact, sometimes it just makes me depressed.
Before you read your next book or watch your next show why not ask yourself, is this going to make my life better or fuller?
Perhaps you’re like me: I need to watch what I read.
